Coastal Culture Trial – Business Networking Event

Towner Art Gallery

24th February 2016

Last night Julian and I had the pleasure of attending the Coastal Culture Trial Business Networking Event at the Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne. The event focused on the Towner Art Gallery, De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill and Jerwood Gallery in Hastings, as well as cultural activities to mark the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings and the regeneration of Eastbourne.

Emma Morris, Director of the Towner, spoke about the growth and achievements of the Towner Art Gallery and how important and beneficial it has been, and continues to be, to Eastbourne and the wider community. It was wonderful to hear what a huge positive impact the gallery has had on our local town and the fantastic exhibitions it has hosted and has planned for the coming year.  As a digital design and creative company with a massive interest in art and creativity, we feel very enthusiastic and passionate about supporting our local art gallery and the importance of this within Eastbourne.

Stewart Drew, Director and Chief Executive of the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill, talked about the galleries growth and impact it has had on the local community as a key driving force for change in Bexhill. The De La Warr now brings together art, music, comedy and events in an amazing building for people locally and from further afield to experience the delights of the Bexhill Pavilion. Again, another massive positive influence for the town and its regeneration as a fantastic place to visit and experience.

Kate Giles, Marketing and Communications Manager for the Jerwood Gallery talked about the positive influences they have gained from the Coastal Cultural Trail. In the four years since the gallery was built, it has had a significant impact on Hastings and helped to form relationships with businesses in the town. The building itself has brought about a positive change for Hastings, helping to alter people's perception of the town which has been helped through positive media.

The final three presentations were given by Polly Gifford, Strategic Cultural Development Specialist at Hastings Borough Council, Phil Evans, Senior Head of Tourism and Enterprise at Eastbourne Borough Council and Philip Johnson from Locate East Sussex.

It was an inspirational and uplifting evening and we feel positive about the future of our area and what it has to offer as a cultural and creative setting like no other. It was enlightening to hear how the Coastal Culture Trial is bringing together and linking the three galleries which are spread across the beautiful south coast of England. We are proud to be a business in Eastbourne and a part of the towns economic growth. We look forward to the progress the Coastal Cultural Trial is bringing to our wonderful coastal towns.

On a personal note, I frequently visit the galleries with my family and attend some of the fabulous events they have on offer. My three daughters have always thoroughly enjoyed their time and experiences, especially when my five year old 's classroom photo was selected and displayed at ‘Julian Germain: The Future is Ours, Classroom Portraits 2004 – 2015’ exhibition, her small claim to local fame!
