What are Google Trends?

If you are not already aware, Google Trends is a website by Google which allows you to basically ‘explore what the world is searching’. With Google Trends you can analyse search queries and keyword search terms that are popular for you to gain an insight and some measurable results into your industry and competitors. Trends results can be shown across countries and regions, as well as languages and are displayed as graphs. You can also compare this information over a selected period, so you can get daily search trend results or real time trend results. At the end of every year Google produce an interesting video of popular US search trends for that year, view below for 2018.

Why are Google Trends Useful?

Google Trends are useful for your marketing strategy and to gain a better understanding of what people are searching for and looking at on Google. It can give you some important information when you are looking at your audience and how, when and where to market your products or services. These trends can then help assist you in boosting your online presence and brand awareness by using the popular search terms in your website content, in social posts, blogs and digital marketing activity. The impact of this can positively affect your sales and conversions. You can adjust your marketing effort as the trends change over the year and keep an eye on how your industry is changing or progressing.

Using Google Trends

Google Trends allows you to select which country you would like to analyse so results are shown across the world. You can select a period of time, a category or a web search type such as images, or Google Shopping results. You can search for a search term or topic and you can also compare the popularity of one search term against another search term. So, for example you could compare the search term ‘cakes’ against ‘cupcakes,’ pictured below, which shows that the keyword ‘cakes’ is more popular and therefore could affect how you would use ‘cakes’ more in your marketing. Results will show interest by sub region as well as useful information for top related topics and related queries.
